Sakura

Posted by Niña (New York, United States) on 14 May 2008 in Plants & Nature and Portfolio.

My first taste of spring... and I'm loving it! Growing up in a tropical country, the only seasons I've really been exposed to are the summer and the rainy seasons. Well so far, I've been through autumn and winter here in NY, and spring is definitely topping my list!

This shot was taken at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden during the Sakuri Matsuri Festival a week ago. I really am awed by the beauty of this tree and wanting to know more about it... well, i resorted to good ol' Wiki! ; )

Sakura (Japanese kanji : 桜 or 櫻; katakana: サクラ; hiragana: さくら) is the Japanese name for cherry trees, and their blossoms. In English, the word "sakura" is equivalent to the Japanese flowering cherry, and their blossoms are commonly called cherry blossoms. Cherry fruit (known in Japanese as sakuranbo) comes from another species of tree. You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sakura
